a seat for jenny...

earlier this month I sent jenny a dear little chair. I was at CHA and happened to meet her for the very first time. I was thrilled to say the least and loved, loved her outfit! needless to say the camera came out, the picture was snapped and jenny was perfect in every way for the little chair I was designing in my head at the moment! the top photo was an atc card to accompany her chair...
she loved her chair and wrote about it on her blog. I am still blushing with the excitement! her piece on chairs and how they relate to our importance was brillant!

I apologize the photo is small, click the photo see jenny in all her glory!

Vintage at Heart: Well-priced glamour and style in Studio City

alisonfreebairnsmith90BY ALISON FREEBAIRN-SMITH

I have been a fan of vintage clothing since back in the 1970’s when I bought my bed jackets and faded Levis at Aardvark’s Odd Ark in Venice because it was one of the only places to buy vintage clothes, at the time.

In the 1980’s, when I became a collector, I frequented various vintage outlets in North Hollywood, on Melrose and in Santa Monica and made monthly sojourns to the Rose Bowl swap meet and anxiously awaited the annual Vintage Clothing Expo at the civic auditorium in Santa Monica where I would run into people like Daryl Hannah scouring the racks. All of that was before my daughter was born, when I could actually afford to spend a whole day shopping.

Now, when I’m in the mood to buy something pretty to wear, I rarely leave my own neighborhood. With my busy schedule there just isn’t time and traffic makes it impossible to get anywhere, quickly. That’s why I was thrilled to discover that one of the best vintage clothing stores around is right in the middle of my favorite shopping block in Studio City — Vintage at Heart.

Tiffany Neuman has owned a few popular stores on Tujunga over the years, including Trellis and The Yard Garden

Tiffany Neuman has graced Tujunga Village with several tasteful, reasonably-priced shops on the block of Tujunga Avenue just south of Moorpark, over the years. You may remember Trellis, which featured furnishings and some clothing, a la Shabby Chic (only at much more affordable prices) and The Yarn Garden, where her unique hand-knit sweaters made everyone want to learn how to knit.

According to Tiffany, she loves to create and “has to keep her hands moving” so she is always knitting, crocheting, painting, sewing or gluing something. After attending L.A. Trade Tech where she studied fashion design, Tiffany designed and manufactured all kinds of accessories for popular specialty and department stores including Nordstrom, Fred Segal, Judy’s and Contempo Casuals.

Her latest venture, Vintage at Heart, boasts equally stocked collections of vintage clothing for men and women at bargain prices guaranteed to satisfy even the most discriminating shopper as well as those with the tightest budget. In this economy, it’s a real blessing. Everything is stylish and flawless – whether it’s a suede jacket from the 1970’s or a peasant blouse from the 1960’s. Moreover, many of her pieces boast designer labels, such as Gary Graham, Jean Paul Gaultier, Moth, Dosa, Chan Luu. Tiffany has a real eye for current fashion trends and never skimps on quality.

Newly showcased in Vintage at Heart is an innovative, but lovely and practical line of clothing and jewelry called ACStudio9, another homegrown production from a local resident who just happens to be Angela Cartwright, the actress/photographer/artist who once owned and operated her own retail store in Toluca Lake, Rubber Boots. You also may remember her from her roles in Make Room for Daddy, Lost in Space and The Sound of Music.

Angela and her creative partner, Connie Freedman, have invented a whole new fashion accessory somewhere between a scarf and a shawl, but with pockets. Each one comes with a brooch featuring hand-colored reproductions of Angela’s personal photographs like the ones she took in Austria at some of the locales where they filmed The Sound of Music. Necklaces frame her photos in sterling silver while some of the wraps have them printed right on the fabric. There are large pockets on most of the wraps so you can keep things like eyeglasses handy or just keep your hands warm.

At Vintage at Heart, you’ll find blouses ($10-30), skirts ($10-30), dresses ($15-75), hand-dyed slips ($15-25), vintage rock and roll and other T-shirts ($10) and cowboy boots ($25-65) hand-picked by Tiffany that look like they were plucked from a Hollywood movie wardrobe. You’ll also find choice pieces of furnishings including mirrors and chandeliers as well as a hip smattering of jewelry and accessories that would beckon much higher prices, elsewhere, including hand-crocheted flower pins, made by Tiffany herself ($15) that look great on anything, and artful antique bottles adorned with shells and other baubles. Even the fixtures are for sale!

When word gets out, I won’t be a bit surprised if Hollywood’s fashion princes and princesses start heading over the hill to Studio City to pick up something to wear to their next soiree. Why pay a fortune when you can get so much more for your money at Vintage at Heart? On the one hand, I hesitate to tell people about Vintage at Heart for fear that my wardrobe will suffer if too many people find out about it. On the other hand, it’s just too good a secret to keep!

mmmm

Scarves, shawls and brooches (plaid and beige above) are among Cartwright's inventive designs. Photo: Karen Young

Angela Cartwright will be at Vintage at Heart to talk about her line of clothing and jewelry and to sign copies of her three art books at an open house on Saturday, November 21st, from 4 to 8 pm.

Vintage at Heart is located at 4377 Tujunga Ave., Studio City, CA, 91604

missionary man

I had the honor of taking judy wilkenfeld's class " just in case" recently. I met wonderful women whom we have become great friends. thanks to the beautiful souls Judy attracts. I believe we were all in search of putting our past's together. judy was a strong, fun teacher & friend. If you haven't taken her class I suggest you do and if you have you know you'll be taking it again!
I am still working on this piece and glad I didn't get to finish it so I could put more heart and soul into it. here are a few pics of my work & friends:

my grandfather lived quite the life! he was a cowboy, a sailor, accountant & eventually a carpenter for the studios. after he was a sailor in ww1. he travelled to utah and became a mormon missionary. in which he served his mission in the mid 1920's. his assignment was missouri. the first photo is of him studying on the side of the road. he labled this photo "stick work" it was a nick name (tall & thin). how could I resist the sticks! the series of three is of he and a fellow preacher. notice the the praying hands box, well judy was always saying how things just fall in front of her when she is working on a piece. I had a hard time finding religious pieces that would collaborate with his religion. judy lays out some beautiful brass items for sale and voila there is my box! I took a quote from the angel moroni. the paper was old but I distressed it, distressed the string, folded it up and put it in this beautiful little box!

lft to rt: me, reva, fana. judy, neena, leslie & renee! yes we are missing anna, joanna & beth.

being tagged by riki!

I've been TAGGGGGGGED...
by my friend Riki Schumacher.

So now I have a million questions I'm supposed to answer on my blog and do the best I can...

What is your current obsession? yummy fabrics, acstudio9.com and worring when I'll have time for art!

What is your weirdest obsession? pearls & turquoise...I am so not the accessory type! but I'm learning!
What would you eat for your last meal? rack of lamb with garlic mashers!

What are you wearing today? a tank top, cargo capres and my great deal... kate spade sandals. love them!!!"
What are you listening to right now? my husbands feet walking up to bed...
What is your favorite ice cream flavor? haagan daaz mint chip!
What do you think of the person who tagged you? love riki! instantly we bonded at a class in california with stephanie lee (one of our favorites!) one talented, warm and friendly lady!
If you could have a house totally paid for, fully furnished, anywhere in the world, where would that be?
Little Fawn. a home i have fallen in love with! santa barbara would be very nice as well...
If you could go anywhere in the world for the next hour, where would that be? only an hour...wales england to do a little relative research!
What language would you like to learn? I always wanted to learn French,
i took classes in high school, forgot it because i never used it! would love to learn how to read hebrew...
What is your favorite color? Oh, I love greens and browns, on the earthy side
What is your favorite piece of clothing? besides my acstudio9 accessories? hmmm, my j.crew tank tops, can't live without them!
Favorite TV show? a big fan of HBO! true blood, enterauge, curb. I like californication too! 24, I have a feeling I'm really going to like the new eastwick show on regular tv.
If you have $100 right now, what would you spend it on? a mannequin i had seen today!
What is your favorite artist? This question just isn't fair. I have so many talented people I follow and admire. I can't list just one. Angela Cartwright, Sara Fishburn, Stephanie Lee, Misty Mawn, Nina Bagley, Judy Wilkenfeld, Ruth Rae, Kristen Robinson, Pam Garrison, Lisa Guerin & Judy Delgado just to name a few.
What is your favorite season? I would have to say Fall! The colors are starting to show, the smells, you get to wear light winter clothes & there is a clean cripness in the air that compares to no other!

Describe your personal style? Since retiring from the "professional" life, all those conservative designer digs are collecting dust! now...I'm trying to find my way other than work out clothes that seem to stay with me all day...I think I need a new do!
What is your favorite movie? ooh too many but here goes, the sound of music, gladiator, the cinderella movie with drew barrymore.
What inspires you? Nature and being outdoors. being organized. Taking workshops. Learning new techniques.meeting great people who inspire me.
What music do you like this week? I have been listening to mike sammis's new cd "hide" and I love to hear smooth jazz while i'm working on a project.
What is your dream job? to create and inspire in art! I just have to find out what medium best suits me!
If you can change something in the world to make it a better place, what would that be? no more hunger...
If you could change anything about you, what would it be?stop my procrastination...I love to cram in everything at the last minute! the surge of energy is a natural high for me!
What do you need? My husband, my kids, and creative opportunity and a space to put it in!
What blocks you from trying something new? My own fear of failure I guess. It is so easy to continue to do what you know, less rejection. But not as much fun. ( i'm keeping riki's answer it was just too good!)
if you were to take an art class who would you choose to take? Judy Wilkenfeld again!

Those are all the questions. I added the last one. So here are the rules:
1) respond and rework; answer the questions on your blog, replace one question that you dislike with one of your invention, add one more question of your own. 2) tag four other
people, and if you're interested in participating, I am tagging you!

art for sale...

I have worked with my dear friend Mike Street for years never knowing he was an artist! I am embarrassed to say... My son and I spent the afternoon traveling down town to see Mike's show on august 1st. WOW is all I can say. Both my son and I loved his work. I purchased a piece, I wish for me but I purchased it for Jake to start his own collection. its Mike's interpretation of Dante's forest of the suicides. the piece is amazing. its pen ever so lightly touching the paper, thread and burns. the piece just floats in the frame. if your in LA please stop by the HIVE gallery to see his work it's wonderful and affordable!

7.31.2009

it's a wrap

busy, busy, busy...
my dear friend angela and I have been brain storming (which I might add is very hard to stay focused with all these ideas flittering around in our heads), designing, selecting fabrics, sewing samples & putting together a web site. it all started with her idea of getting her photographs onto fabric. well, we are so excited with what we have created. here's a peek:

notice the brooches on the 2 pocket shawl? that's the studio art brooch, it is a photographic image taken from angela's original hand painted photographs. each piece in the collection is adorned with one!

7.13.2009

almost to heaven

our views from our cabin in co. are breath taking...ever since we purchased it my husband has wanted to climb those 14rs (over 14,000ft) and so we did! three of them: mt cameron, mt bross & mt lincoln.

two very happy people! we met a great couple on the way up with a motto of "slow & steady" you can only imagine the views...spectacular! the valleys were the greenest of irish greens with saphire lakes & vibrant blue skys. now when i look out at those mountain tops there is such a reverence, respect & thanks for such beauty.

god bless america

the old state house balcony where president george washington stood reading the constitution of the united states of america.
it wasn't until I watched the mini series of john adams did I really understand what our fore fathers had gone through and the many sacrifices they and thier families made. We took a trip to boston. In walking the freedom trail I stood mesmerized by the old state house as i tried to imagine pres. george washington addressing the people. it was a very moving moment...
we are so lucky to live in a great country and celebrate our freedoms.

my misty mawn weekend

3 inspirational days at Carol Parks w/ Misty Mawn! The women who attended were just a lot of fun & wonderful to be around. Misty herself is truly a lovely woman. she is so giving of herself and her art. I enjoyed her class and highly recommend it. not only will you be in awe of the work misty does, how fast her hands flutter about the paper and what she accomplishes in a matter of minutes, you will also be in awe of the work you produce! this is one of my first back grounds. pretty cool! the layering you learn is just beautiful...

at a spur of the moment decision we escaped with misty into hollywood and had a blast, zooming around these narrow streets in the hills, stumbling upon a garden of tile by andrew sellers which by the way is very cool!, finding our way to the hollywood sign, driving on hollywood blvd & enjoying dinner at city walk, universal. my partners in crime: misty and mary geller.

andrew sellers work of art...this wall was truly amazing...a tile garden, toy garden and rock thrown all built with in his walls.

the result of my back grounds almost complete! very happy!!
my new friend Mary Geller, I just loved her spontaneity!
our interpretation of one face and misty's...

our group at carol parks. wonderful and fun woman! thank you...

garden banners arrive!

are these not fabulous? when I take over my son's room in the fall I am going to hang all the banners I have around the top of his room and surround myself with these little beauties of inspiration!

5.21.2009

tribute with a banner

it's amazing how I can start out with a full desk and all of a sudden my art and inspiration start to encroach in all areas leaving me 10 inches to work with!
this banner is a swap for the group "in this house and garden" hosted by susie la fond. I must say I had so many ideas of home and garden it had me thinking of my youth and my mom. mothers day had just past and seeing she is no longer with me I had the idea of using her name rosemary.  how apropos for a garden theme. I love things with meanings or stories.  a little gift for myself , a gift of remembrance...

jazz fest, new orleans

my first trip to jazz fest '09 in new orleans. I loved how old the city is. the buildings all have so much character with wrought iron around balconies, shutters at every window and just how it's aging so gracefully. you could see the beauty in the abandon buildings and could imagine the life they once had. the street bands were awesome, the energy was fun, the restaurants were great, the balconies were packed with people throwing beads and shouting & yes I caught a few beads on bourbon street.

our good friend mike...
a building grate, most of the open work has been sealed over time.

the festival was great. not to mentions the folding chairs we purchased which is a must, with drink holders! we had seen so many cool artists: james taylor, earth wind & fire, dave matthews, john mooney, papa grows funk & etta james. I know i'm forgetting a few.  but what a line up!

we had clout! thanks mike...
our gang: lft- my empty chair, marc, cathy, eddie, mike & sue

"papa grows funk" & a lot of peeps...
and of course what is new orleans with out beignets at cafe du monde?

one of my favorite artists, stephanie lee

this picture was taken last october at art and soul in portland. I loved her class so much so that I signed up for three days of her at carol park's noho studio. stephanie is a great teacher, she doesn't hold back, is patient and believes in teaching everything she knows so you can adapt it to your art. she is warm, funny and a delight to be with. if you ever have the opportunity to take a class with her it's a must!
I look a little happy...notice the necklace my first "stephanie lee" piece and I just love it! when it's not adorning me it's adorning my bathroom wall! truly one of my treasures...
